Brentford xTottenham - prediction, team news, lineups

This fixture marks one of two all-London clashes on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 Premier League season, with Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur kicking off their campaigns at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday night.

It has been a long time since Brentford triumphed over Tottenham, with the Bees struggling to secure a win since the days of Thomas Frank, as they now prepare to face the new manager who has taken over officially his first full season in charge.

Match overview

Tottenham, who narrowly retained their Premier League status, would have already initiated their competitive activities had things taken a turn for the worse last season. However, De Zerbi’s commitment will remain steadfast in the Championship for the 2026-27 season.

To dismiss the back-to-back finishes of 17th position during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, Tottenham has opened their wallet in a significant way this summer, setting a transfer record twice within days for the £185m midfield pairing of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.

The prospect of an additional major investment looms as De Zerbi seeks to bolster an understrength attacking front with Manchester City talents Savinho and Omar Marmoush. Nevertheless, the team’s performance in pre-season was commendable, achieving four victories, three draws, and remaining unbeaten in seven matches.

Among the highlights was a 2-1 win over local rivals Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup, with their pre-season concluding with a 3-0 victory and a 2-2 draw against Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, the first match attracting a more hopeful crowd at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Tottenham supporters have also witnessed only one defeat in their last ten opening-day matches in the Premier League, which was a closed-doors loss to Everton in 2020, and the Lilywhites have had decent outings during their previous encounters with Brentford in the Premier League.

Only two clubs have hosted more than one Premier League match at the Gtech Community Stadium without suffering defeat: Chelsea and Tottenham, with Brentford struggling to secure a home victory against them since their return to the top flight in 2021.

A goalless draw on New Year’s Day marked the fourth stalemate in five Premier League contests at this venue, extending Brentford’s scoreless streak against Tottenham to three games while halting a four-match losing run against the North London side.

Keith Andrews’s team has struggled to match Tottenham’s unbeaten pre-season, facing a 1-0 defeat against Watford on August 1, but responded superbly by winning their next four friendlies, scoring an impressive 17 goals overall.

Seven of those goals emerged from a stunning 7-0 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt in their last friendly, boosting hopes for a long-awaited return to European competition in the 2027-28 season, after narrowly missing out on a Conference League spot based on goal difference last term.

Although Brentford’s performance last season saw just one win from their last ten Premier League outings, they ended the previous campaign without a single defeat at home in London derbies and secured their last two opening-day victories against capital opposition – notably against Arsenal in 2021-22 and Crystal Palace in 2024-25.

Team News

In addition to their widely reported offensive challenges, Tottenham faces a new defensive issue for the season opener, with Micky van de Ven considered a significant doubt after missing training earlier in the week.

Newly signed players Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke are expected to make their full debuts, joining Premier League champion Andrew Robertson, who is anticipated to start at left-back as Destiny Udogie returns to full fitness.

Xavi Simons (ACL), Wilson Odobert (knee), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), and Mohammed Kudus (thigh) are also ruled out for Saturday’s clash, but Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes, and James Maddison have been training with the squad and should be available.

Brentford isn’t entering the new season without its own injury concerns, as Sepp van den Berg (unspecified) and Antoni Milambo (knee) remain sidelined with no clear timeline for their return.

Aside from these absences, Andrews’s squad appears to be in good shape, particularly in the attacking third, where Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade both found the net multiple times in Frankfurt’s demolition.

Record signing Mamadou Sangare also scored in that match and is likely to be paired with Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen in a midfield trio.

Brentford probable starting XI:

Kelleher; Kayode, Ajer, Collins, Lewis-Potter; Sangare, Janelt; Ouattara, Jensen, Schade; Thiago

Tottenham Hotspur probable starting XI:

Kinsky; Gray, Senesi, Van Hecke, Robertson; Tonali, Fernandes; Moore, Gallagher, Tel; Richarlison

While Tottenham’s offensive lineup may seem somewhat depleted, the pre-season performances of Mikey Moore, Mathys Tel, and Richarlison, combined with Solanke and Maddison returning to fitness, suggest De Zerbi’s squad will be ready to attack.

However, as several new defensive signings learn to work together, an ambitious Brentford side is expected to put up a strong fight, likely leading to a thrilling opening-day draw.
