Aarhus xBraga - prediction, team news, lineups

The Danish team Aarhus aims to leverage their home ground as they prepare to face the Portuguese side Braga in the third matchday of the Conference League on Thursday.

Having secured only one point from their initial two fixtures, the home team is keen to gain their first points, while the Portuguese will look to build on a solid league performance over the weekend and continue their momentum from the match against Gent two weeks ago.

Match overview

What appeared to be a promising return to form turned into frustration for Aarhus as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Brondby during their encounter at Brondby Stadium on Sunday.

After failing to secure a win in their first nine league matches, De Hvii’e rebounded with two victories and a draw from their next three appearances, overcoming both SonderjyskE and Viborg before being brought back down to earth by goals from Marko Divkovic and Mads Frokjaer on Sunday.

Aarhus’ difficulties have not been confined to just the league, as they have managed to earn just a single point in their opening two Conference League matches, requiring an upturn in form before tougher encounters await them in the coming fixtures.

Jakob Poulsen’s charges commenced their journey in the Conference League with a 1-0 defeat to Gent on October 15, followed by a 1-1 draw against Egnatia, in which James Bogere equalized in the 49th minute after Ildi Gruda’s opener in the 13th minute.

Now returning home after consecutive away matches, Aarhus will be optimistic about their chances in front of their fans, having claimed two wins and two draws in four outings at Cepheus Park since September 5.

Across in Portugal, Braga responded to a disappointing cup elimination with a strong team performance last weekend, securing a 3-0 win against Famalicao in the second leg of their cup and league double header.

After a scoreless first half at Estadio Municipal de Braga, the home team increased their intensity following the interval, with Ricardo Horta and Pau Vitor scoring either side of an own goal by Vitor Rofino in the 67th minute, propelling them to victory and moving them up to eighth in the Primeira Liga table.

This was a timely boost for Braga as they prepare to return to European competition, especially after suffering five losses in their last six matches across all tournaments, which included back-to-back defeats in the Primeira Liga against Sporting CP, Gil Vicente, and Nacional, as well as a penalty shootout defeat to Famalicao in the Taca da Liga quarter-finals on October 29.

Now, their attention shifts back to the Conference League, where Franclim Carvalho’s team faced a disappointing opener on October 15, suffering a 3-0 defeat against the Swiss side Copenhagen, with Mohamed Elyounoussi scoring first and Andreas Cornelius netting twice late in the match.

However, Os Arcebispos found their footing one week later against Gent, clinching a 2-0 victory at Estadio Municipal de Braga with strikes from Vitor Gomez and Gabriel Martine before and after the halftime break, respectively.

Concerns remain regarding Braga’s capability to perform away from home, and they must step up their game at Cepheus Park. They have not secured a win in their last four away matches, managing only one victory in their last eight since the start of August.

Team News

Aarhus will take the field without Swedish defender Eric Kahl, who is serving a suspension due to a red card received during their match against Egnatia on October 22.

While Kahl’s absence is a significant blow for the defense, Poulsen can count on Islândia international Daniel Gretarsson, who is expected to step into the back three alongside Colin Rosler and Frederik Tingager.

In terms of injuries, Aarhus will also miss midfielders Nicolai Poulsen and Kevin Yakob, who are sidelined with knee and Achilles tendon issues, respectively.

For Braga, Sikou Niakate is still on the road to recovery from an Achilles tendon injury sustained in April and will not be available for Thursday’s fixture.

Following an impressive display against Famalicao, Carvalho may opt to field a similar starting XI in Denmark, featuring Mario Dorgeles, Horta, Gabriel Martinez, and Fran Navarro in attack, while Vitor Gomez and Adrian Leon Barisic should continue their roles at the back.

Aarhus probable starting XI:

Hansen; Rosler, Tingager, Gretarsson; Carstensen, Arnstad, Solbakken, Andersen; Jorgensen, McCowatt; Books

Braga probable starting XI:

Sources; Gomez, Barisic, Lagerbielke, Arrey-Mby; Gorby, Moutinho; Dorgeles, Horta, Martinez; Navarro

After a shaky start to the campaign, Aarhus will be eager to get their European journey underway in front of their home fans. However, Braga’s experience in European encounters could be a significant factor in what is anticipated to be a tightly contested match. The Portuguese team possesses superior talent on the field, and it is likely that they will secure a result, perhaps by a narrow margin.
