Netherlands vs Ecuador – News and Probable Lineups

As the Países Baixos and Ecuador gear up for the 2026 World Cup, it is vital that they approach Tuesday’s friendly match at Philips Stadion seriously to fine-tune their readiness for the international tournament.

The home side triumphed over Norway 2-1 on Friday, and they have only two more matches planned before summer, whereas Tuesday’s fixture serves as Ecuador’s final game ahead of the tournament.

Match overview

Ronald Koeman, the head coach of Países Baixos, will be satisfied that his team took the lead against Norway from a corner kick, given his reported intent to make set pieces a tactical focus this summer.

Recent performances in major tournaments have been a mixed bag for his team, having reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024, while facing elimination in the quarter-finals of both the 2022 World Cup and the Nations League 2024-25.

The Oranje have been in excellent form leading up to Tuesday’s match, remaining undefeated in their last nine games, winning seven of those.

In fact, the Países Baixos netted a minimum of three goals in four of their six previous fixtures, successfully keeping three clean sheets in that time.

Koeman will also aim to stretch their home unbeaten run to 10 matches, with a victory marking their sixth during this span.

Ecuador managed to hold AFCON champions Morocco to a 1-1 draw on Friday, marking their eighth stalemate in 10 encounters, although they were victorious in the other two games.

The visitors on Tuesday are sure to be tough opponents given their strong defensive capabilities, having conceded only three goals in their last 10 games.

However, Ecuador has not scored in half of those matches, yet their skill set could be advantageous in knockout scenarios.

La Selección has only encountered the Países Baixos three times historically – with two draws and one loss, the latter being a 1-1 tie during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

In the last seven matches outside of Ecuador under the stewardship of head coach Sebastián Beccacece, his team has recorded seven draws, frustrating teams like Canada and the USA.

Team News

The Países Baixos are expected to feature Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen once more, who will likely receive support from central defenders Virgil van Dijk and Jan Paul van Hecke.

Ryan Gravenberch may earn his 26th cap, while Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders could be replaced in an advanced position by Xavi Simons.

Even though Donyell Malen started as the main striker against Norway, Koeman could opt to start Brian Brobbey in his place, as the latter came on as a substitute last time out.

Ecuador’s solid defensive showing would not have been possible without Moisés Caicedo, who will anchor a four-man defence that includes Paris Saint-Germain’s Willian Pacho.

With winger John Yeboah taken off due to injury against Morocco, it’s possible that Kendry Páez might be deployed on the right wing, with Enner Valencia expected to feature as a striker.

Netherlands probable starting XI:

Bridge; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; Gravenberch, Smit; Koopmeiners, Simons, Gakpo; Brobbey

Ecuador probable starting XI:

Galindez; Franco, Ordonez, Pacho, Estupinan; Caicedo, Vite; Paez, Plata, Minda; Valencia

Ecuador’s defensive record is outstanding, though they will face a Países Baixos team currently in excellent goal-scoring form.

While it may be tough to envision the visitors facing a defeat, the hosts should have sufficient quality to avoid losing at Philips Stadion.
