Porto vs Arouca – News and Probable Lineups

League leaders Porto aim to establish a seven-point cushion at the top of the Primeira Liga, albeit temporarily, as they host Arouca at the Estadio do Dragao in the first of two fixtures on Friday for matchday 24.

The Dragons proudly kick off this round and will be determined to claim a victory to enhance their lead over second-placed Sporting Lisbon, who are set to play Estoril Praia later that evening.

Match overview

For the second time this season, Porto perfectly answered Sporting’s earlier match win, as Victor Froholdt’s 22nd-minute goal was enough for the Dragons to secure a 1–0 triumph against a struggling Rio Ave at the Dragao last Sunday.

This result not only secured back-to-back wins for Françasco Farioli’s team — following a similar score against Nacional in their last outing — but also kept their four-point lead at the top. However, it also indicates that the 30-time Primeira Liga champions have failed to score more than once in their past four games.

This span includes Porto’s sole defeat in 23 league matches this season (W20, D2), occurring at Casa Pia on matchday 20 and followed by a hard-fought 1–1 stalemate against their nearest title rival, Sporting.

Currently vying for the final two pieces of domestic silverware, the Dragons and the Lions are set to face each other next Tuesday in the first leg of their Taca de Portugal semi-final, following their respective matches on Friday.

Hoping to create momentum ahead of that encounter and potentially widen their lead at the top, Porto can feel secure about their chances against Arouca, having secured nine wins in their last 10 matches at the Dragao across all competitions (D1). Farioli’s side also holds the best home record in the league, accumulating 29 points from a possible 33.

The Blue and Whites have been formidable defensively, conceding a league-low seven goals and keeping an impressive 17 clean sheets. This defensive strength may again be crucial, as all seven of Porto’s victories in their last nine top-flight matches (D2) were achieved without conceding.

Interestingly, Arouca’s recent positive experiences in this matchup have been when they successfully penetrated Porto’s defense, with a 1–1 away draw and a 3–2 home victory during the 2023–24 season marking their only wins in a six-match league stretch.

This sequence also includes a 4–0 defeat in the earlier meeting this season, indicating that the Wolves have allowed a total of 10 goals in their last three encounters with the Dragons without finding the net. Nonetheless, their recent performances do provide some hope before the upcoming match.

Vasco Seabra’s squad has celebrated five victories in their eight matches in 2026 (L3), netting exactly three goals in each of their last three wins, which featured a 3–0 demolition of Nacional last weekend thanks to second-half goals from Alfonso Trezza, Hyunju Lee, and Dylan Nandin.

After managing only two wins from their first 15 league games (D5, L8) this season, which included a five-match losing streak from late October to early December, Arouca’s revival has propelled them out of the relegation zone into a safer standing.

Now positioned 11th in the Primeira Liga and eight points clear of the playoff zone, the Wolves will aim to increase the gap from relegation with a positive outcome on Friday, despite having experienced defeat in six of their 11 away matches this season (W3, D2).

Team News

Porto is currently facing injury challenges on both ends, with forwards Samu Aghehowa and Luuk de Jong sidelined for the season due to knee issues.

Centre-back Nehuen Perez, absent since September due to an Achilles tendon injury, might return in time to play before the season concludes.

Moreover, defenders Martim Fernandes, Jakub Kiwior, and Thiago Silva are all anticipated to be unavailable for Friday’s encounter as they continue to recover.

Farioli’s midfield options are further restricted by the suspension of Alan Varela, who received his fifth yellow card of the season in last weekend’s win against Rio Ave.

Arouca has its own disciplinary challenges, with Tiago Esgaio and Espen van Ee both facing suspensions due to yellow card accumulations.

The last match was also bittersweet for Lee, who was sent off late after scoring and assisting, thus he will be absent here.

Additionally, Arouca will miss midfielders Mateo Flores and Pedro Santos, who have been out for the last four and six matches, respectively, due to injuries.

Porto probable starting XI:

D Costa; A Costa, Rosario, Bednarek, Sanusi; R Mora, Froholdt, Veiga; Pepe, Gul, Pietuszewski

Arouca probable starting XI:

Arruabarrena; J Silva, Sanchez, Fountain, Kuipers; Santiago, Fukui; Trezza, Gozalbez, Djouahra; Barbero

Both teams are dealing with absentees, but Arouca might feel the impact of their missing players more acutely, as three starters from last weekend’s triumph over Nacional will not feature.

On the other hand, Porto has greater squad depth, and although they are facing personnel issues, their defense has shown solid form, suggesting that a solitary goal could once again suffice for them to secure maximum points on Friday.
