Augsburg xBayern - prediction, team news, lineups

As Bayern Munich continues to pursue their rivals for the Bundesliga title, they are set to visit Augsburg at WWK Arena this Friday.

Die Fuggerstadter will be eager to bounce back from recent losses following the international break, while Bayern aims for their fourth consecutive victory.

Match overview

Manuel Baum’s Augsburg began the 2026-27 season strongly; however, it has become evident that their form has dipped lately.

Die Fuggerstadter secured a commendable 3-0 victory over Schalke 04 on matchday one, followed by a resounding 4-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt a week later.

Nevertheless, Baum’s team encountered difficulties as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayer Leverkusen on September 12, a match where an 89th-minute equaliser from Patrik Schick erased the advantage gained by Michael Gregoritsch’s two goals.

In their last league performance, Augsburg’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed again, leading to a disappointing 3-2 loss to Werder Bremen after they had a two-goal lead.

Currently, Die Fuggerstadter sit fourth in the Bundesliga standings, but with just seven points, their position for European competition qualification is already under threat, as they are tied in points with Leverkusen, Mainz 05, Elversberg, and Werder Bremen.

For Baum’s squad to achieve a positive result in Saturday’s fixture, they must address their defensive issues, but fans may be apprehensive after the team recently drew 2-2 in a friendly against second-division club Hertha Berlin, marking the third match in a row where they conceded twice.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, under Vincent Kompany, has remained undefeated this season across all competitions; however, they have yet to reclaim the top position in the Bundesliga.

Currently, the Bavarians are second in the league table, trailing their Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund by two points, who have won all four of their matches thus far.

Kompany’s team will head into Saturday’s match with confidence, having accumulated six wins out of seven fixtures in the 2026-27 season, with their only setback being a goalless draw against newly-promoted Schalke on September 5.

Augsburg poses a unique challenge, as they were the only team to inflict a defeat on Bayern in their last 47 league encounters, winning 2-1 at the Allianz Arena on January 24.

Nonetheless, fans of Bayern will not be overly concerned as the Bavarians have triumphed in seven of their last eight encounters with Augsburg.

Team News

Augsburg will be missing 19-year-old center-back Noahkai Banks, who sustained a knee injury (lateral ligament) while representing Germany’s Under-21s.

In his absence, Calvin Brackelmann, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, and Chrislain Matsima are expected to form Baum’s defensive lineup, flanked by wing-backs Marius Wolf and Hennes Behrens.

Additionally, midfielder Tim Breithaupt will miss Saturday’s match due to a toe injury, along with striker Steve Mounie.

Nevertheless, Han-Noah Massengo and Fabian Rieder are anticipated to start in central midfield, supporting the more attacking Alexis Claude-Maurice and Robin Fellhauer, who will be behind Michael Gregoritsch in the attack.

On the Bayern side, they will be without attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala, who is recovering from a torn muscle fibre in his right thigh suffered during warm-ups for Germany’s match against the Netherlands.

While the 23-year-old is undergoing individual training, Ismael Saibari may take his place in the number 10 role, joining Michael Olise and Luis Diaz in support of Ballon d’Or nominee Harry Kane.

Augsburg probable starting XI:

Damen; Brackelmann, Gouweleuw, Matsima; Wolf, Massengo, Rieder, Behrens; Fellhauer, Claude-Maurice; Gregoritsch

Bayern Munich probable starting XI:

Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Davies; Pavlovic, Kimmich; Olise, Saibari, Diaz; Kane

Augsburg has shown defensive vulnerabilities in recent weeks, and unless they rectify these significant issues, a straightforward defeat seems likely.

Bayern’s formidable attacking force will face a struggling defence, and the visitors appear poised to secure another three points.
